Global Village Begins
Updated: May 17, 2019
The RPCV Global Village project has achieved lift-off. We are now incorporated as a Florida non-profit, with EIN and bank account. The website is up and running with functional DONATE buttons. And we have a Facebook page with over 200 "likes".
The core concept of RPCV Global Village is to utilize the technical and language skills acquired during Peace Corps service overseas, to help people here in the USA. Response to the RPCV survey has been remarkably strong and positive, with 65% of respondents indicating interest or strong interest in serving a 1 or 2 week term in the program. Also good interest (42%) in a long term residence option.
Six local charities are excited about having RPCVs augment and expand their program offerings. I'll be working with them to develop specific program offerings with the help of other Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. We hope to have program offerings on the website by this summer (2019), with opportunities in January to April of 2020 to come to SW Florida and serve the large immigrant worker and other rural populations.
The first year(s), volunteers will be housed together , mostly in dorm space (a few private spaces for couples) with transportation and a food provided. Programs will be held at existing area facilities. Eventually, we hope to have our own residential and training facility, with a long term residence option, dining hall and farm/garden.
And who knows? If the Village in Florida is successful, maybe others in the Southwest or California.
Fundraising will begin soon.
